Need a Visa or not?

There is a lot of disinformation to be found on many thailand-related communitys in the internet.

Do you need a Visa? Is there a Visa on Arrival available in Thailand? And so on.

Fact is: The majority of foreigners dont need a Visa. If a foreigner from one of these 41 countrys listed at the end of this page enter Thailand by air they get a Visa Exemption which allow the traveller to stay 30 daysin the Kingdom. If they enter Thailand by land border they are allowed to stay 15 days.

If you want to stay longer you can do (so far unlimited, this was different a few years ago) Visaruns and cross the border or fly out and in to get 30/15 days again.

If you dont want to cross the border to often or if u are a citizen of a country not have listed within the 41 countrys on the bottom of this page u can apply for a Tourist Visa, which allow you to stay in Thailand as follows:

  • Single Entry Visa: 60 days.
  • Double Entry Visa: 2 x 60 days
  • Tripple Entry Visa: 3 x 60 days

After 60 days you have to cross the border, but can come back to Thailand right away. If you dont want to waste to much space in your passport you can do the Visa Run to Malaysia. Malaysia allows Foreigners from many Countys to enter Malaysia without a Visa. A Visa usually require a full site in your Passport. As a frequent traveller i can tell you that 30 or 40 sites in your passport are used up pretty quickly.

Unluckily the numbers of Tourist Visa u can obtain is limited. Thai Embassy's around Thailand handle this in different ways. So far u can obtain up to 5 Tourist Visas in a row in Vientianne in Laos. Even in your home country the rules to get a Tourist Visa granted differ from Embassy to consulate.

If you want to work in Thailand u have to apply for an Non-O Visa, which allow you to stay in Thailand up to one year, interrupted by Visa runs every 90 days. If you apply for a Workpermit then the permit to stay can be one year without the stressful event of a useless visarun every 90 days.

Visa Exemption is available for the citizens of the following countrys:
